Custom Acoustic Panels for the Chicago Lion House

Chicago, Illinois

Noise Control
2” fabric panels

Since its opening back in 1912, the lion house at Lincoln Park Zoo – now Pepper Family Wildlife Center –  has been a staple to the Windy City, providing visitors with the opportunity to have a nose-to-nose experience with carnivores.

However, the vaulted ceiling made up of white terra cotta, as stunning as it is, essentially creates an echo chamber that diminishes the overall guest experience. The K&W team was recruited to find an acoustical solution to control noise reverberation while maintaining the building’s historic decor. After analyzing the space, the K&W acoustics experts installed 2” fabric panels along the walls to absorb soundwaves coming from guest chatter, the occasional lion roar, and the excited screams from children that often follow said roar.

Further, the panels were fully customized to match the color of the space, providing seamless, yet effective, acoustical treatment.

We enjoy all the projects we do at K&W, but we take special pride in our ability to provide a tailor-made solution to solve a complex problem.
